About the Hiligaynon Language:
The Hiligaynon language, also known as Ilonggo, is an Austronesian language predominantly spoken in the Western Visayas and Soccsksargen regions of the Philippines. It is concentrated primarily in the provinces of Iloilo and Negros Occidental but is also spoken in other areas of the Panay Island group, such as Capiz, Antique, Aklan, and Guimaras, as well as parts of Mindanao.
Hiligaynon is one of the major languages of the Philippines and is part of the larger Visayan language family. It boasts approximately 7 million native speakers and several million more who speak it as a second language. The language is known for its gentle intonation and melodic qualities, making it pleasant to the ears of both native and non-native speakers.
Hiligaynon has a relatively simple grammar structure compared to other Philippine languages, with a focus on predicate-initial sentences and a verb-subject-object (VSO) order. It employs a number of affixes to denote various tenses, moods, and aspects of verbs. The language also borrows extensively from Spanish, reflecting centuries of colonial history.
The cultural richness of Hiligaynon-speaking regions is reflected in their literature, folk songs, and traditional dances, all of which contribute to the vibrant cultural heritage of the Hiligaynon people. Understanding and communicating in Hiligaynon not only facilitates business and social interactions in these regions but also provides a deeper appreciation of their unique cultural expressions.
